Pico is a prefix which means “small.” In the marine aquarium industry, a pico reef is simply a small marine aquarium, typically under 4 gallons. An aquarium over 4 gallons but less than 30 gallons is referred to as a nano aquarium or nano reef. While any ‘marine aquarium’ can be classified as a pico or nano when compared to the actual volume of the world’s oceans, these measurements are the industry standards.
Many manufacturers quickly identified the need of the market, and have produced small aquarium packages that cater to the marine aquarium enthusiast. Items such as CPR Aquatic’s Pico-C, JBJ Lighting Picotope and Tom Aquarium Deco Kit are all great examples of all-in-one setups that are ready for livestock. They typically include a tank (glass or acrylic), a light source (fluorescent) and filter. The do-it-yourselfer also has a vast array of choices of separate items to build a unique and very custom package. Check out our ‘Links’ section to see manufacturers’ offerings.
While a pico reef is much similar to a larger marine aquarium in most respects, a pico reef has different limitations and requirements. We’ve gathered our collective experience to bring the information to you. Look under the ‘Info’ section, to get an idea of all the different resources to help educate yourself and start a successful marine aquarium.
